The shows at the Brass Monkey this evening (Thursday 16^th February) and The Vault tomorrow (Friday 17^th February) have been rescheduled to March and April respectively.

Casey is under strict doctors’ orders to rest her voice over coming days in order to make a full recovery. She is devastated to have to postpone the shows and apologises to fans for any inconvenience caused. What’s been keeping you busy professionally in 2011?
I’ve been extremely busy this year. 2011 started off with the continuation of The Sapphires doing a season in Penrith NSW, Canberra ACT, then we travelled over to London for 2 weeks of shows at the Barbican Theatre.

Then I came home, did some Big, Beautiful & Sexy shows up the north coast of NSW and around Sydney.

I then started a production down in Melbourne Called The Flower Children. It was a sell out season and an amazing experience playing the role of Mama Cass Elliot.

To finish off the year, I am now in a Shakespeare production with Company B Belvior, called As You Like It.

As you mentioned, you’ve most recently been involved in the musical Flower Children: the Mamas and Papas Story. How much have you enjoyed the transition from singing/songwriting to acting as a medium?

That I have! I have enjoyed it immensely! The transition was great – it has opened my eyes to a new side of performing. Music will always be my first, but the acting world is a new avenue, and I very much like it.

What did you like most about performing in this musical?

I think I like the learning side of things – learning about Mama Cass and trying to get everything right. There was a lot more pressure, for in this music, Mama Cass being such a free spirit and being so young when she passes, there wasn’t a lot to go by.

For example, I knew that she was a very happy, living life kinda gal, but it was the emotional stuff that got me. The writer, Peter Fitzpatrick, showed a lot of Cass’ hurt, being the bigger girl, and being so in love with Denny Doherty… that would have had to be the most challenging part for me.

One of your more recent awards was for Best Supporting Actress at the Daegu International Musical Festival, for your role in the stage show The Sapphires. Of all the accolades you’ve received since your Australian Idol days, which ones mean the most to you – and why?

Wow … that’s a hard question! I would have to say the award you just asked about. Why? Because I was in a completely different country, they didn’t speak English, they had no idea who I was, and they didn’t judge me! And to be awarded for that and my acting ability … I would have to say that one.

You’re performing at the Saltwater Freshwater Festival in Taree on Australia Day 2012. What does Australia Day mean to you personally – and how would you normally spend the day if you weren’t performing?

I know – and I’m so excited! To me, this day means a whole bunch: it’s a day of celebration being part Aboriginal; it’s a day of survival, a day of remembrance, and a day to get out in the sunshine and enjoy. If I wasn’t working, I would be down at the beach having a BBQ and having a swim.

Five years after becoming the youngest winner of the TV talent show Australian Idol, Casey Donovan is testing her ability as an actor.

She currently is performing in As You Like It for Belvoir – her first Shakespeare play.

“It’s quite daunting for me coming into a room where everyone has either done (Shakespeare) before or knows more about it,” she admits. “But it’s always good to give yourself a challenge and it’s been great working with everybody and learning.

“It’s very exciting. Who would have thought seven years ago that I’d be doing Shakespeare?”

Donovan is finding the production surprisingly accessible. “I think, ‘OK, well if I can understand it, my family and friends will understand it, and my fans who’ve never seen Shakespeare before will understand it,”‘ she says.

As You Like It is a rom-com in which a group of characters including Rosalind, disguised as a boy, flee the court to the Forest of Arden and discover their true selves.

Donovan plays the wench Audrey, who is wooed by the court jester Touchstone, played by impressive young actor Charlie Garber – whose credits include Neighbourhood Watch for Belvoir, The Merchant of Venice for Bell Shakespeare and the TV series Spirited.

The production is directed by Eamon Flack, who had a big success at Belvoir St Downstairs in 2009 with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which he staged like a zany backyard party complete with karaoke songs and contemporary expletives.

With international acts on their first Australian tours and others returning with brand new shows, Sessions offers a fresh take on music for a diverse range of tastes.

Adelaide Festival Centre Artistic Director Douglas Gautier says, “This fantastic new music season in January will see acts from Sydney Festival, MONA FOMA, Falls Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and some of Adelaide’s best performing in the Space.”

The Sessions season will begin with sounds from the steppes of Inner Mongolia, as Hanggai (CHINA) blends traditional music with modern rock on Friday 6 January. Fresh from Falls Festival and into the Space on Friday 6 January, Dan Deacon Ensemble (USA) will woo their audience with front man, Dan Deacon, who has proven to be one of the most charismatic performers in electronic music.

Saturday 8 January will begin with an explosion of funk that is sure to blow Adelaide crowds away, as Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro (JAPAN) return on the back of their performance at 2010 Adelaide Cabaret Festival to ignite the stage.

Proudly Scottish, Sons and Daughters (UK), will deliver a serving of raw and sensual, primal monochrome rock with a potent undertow of post-punk dance on Wednesday 11 January.

Exhilarating, sensual and soulful, Sueño Flamenco (AUS) will take to the Sessions stage on Thursday 12 January, featuring Adelaide’s Areti Boyaci and interstate guests, Tomas Arroquero and Antonio Soria. Sessions will also honour some of the musical greats of last century on Thursday 12 January. Together, the Mike Stewart Big Band (AUS) will celebrate the music of Sinatra and Fitzgerald, featuring ARIA finalist Michelle Nicolle and Luke Thompson.

Friday 13 January will leave us feeling lucky when Sessions play some matchmaking with two of SA’s favourites, Caliente Guitar Trio & The Baker Suite (AUS) taking us on a musical journey. Be prepared for a lush landscape of storytelling, melody and guitar wizardry. For those who tune in late, The Idea of North (AUS) will deliver a stunning array of ARIA winning a Capella in their Radio Show that crosses the sounds of jazz, folk, gospel, pop and classical on Friday 13 January.

Sessions welcomes Australia’s first lady of song, Wendy Matthews (AUS) who will cast us back through her hits on Saturday 14 January, with her show 21 Years Standing Strong.

Speaking of hits, on Wednesday 18 January, Zephyr Quartet (AUS) will deliver a live eclectic mix of Cult Classics by Bjork, Nick Drake, Radiohead, Kraftwerk and more, transcribed for String Quartet. Sydney Chanteuse Catherine Traicos and Western Australian bass clarinet wunderkind Philip Everall meld classical and popular music in the haunting songs of The Unnatural Congress of Still Beating Hearts (AUS) on Wednesday 18 January.

Asa (FRANCE) will captivate her listeners in an intimate show on Thursday 19 January with her strident voice that tackles serious issues and fuses contemporary soul, pop, reggae and funk. Founding member of French hip-hop collective Saian Supa Crew, Féfé (FRANCE) returns to Adelaide on Thursday 19 January with a brand new show, guaranteed to get the house jumping.

Julianna Barwick (USA) performs stunning soundscapes, producing the sound of a full choir and orchestra. See her sophisticated loops and hear her exquisite voice on Friday 20 January.With her spectacular voice, Casey Donovan (AUS) pays tribute to the music of Aretha Franklin, Mama Cass and many more with her show Big Beautiful and Sexy on Friday 20 January.

On the final night, Sessions celebrates the long awaited return of Adam Page (AUS) to Adelaide from New Zealand. This multi- Instrumentalist will captivate his audience with live improvised compositions and endearing charm on Saturday 21 January. To finish the Sessions season with something out of this world, the ARIA nominated Shaolin Afronauts (AUS) will be performing as an 18 piece Afrobeat ensemble. This final show on Saturday 21 January will take you into a musical journey that stretches from Sahara all the way to Saturn.

Australia’s Big, Beautiful & Sexy star Casey Donovan recently took time out of rehearsals for As You Like It to perform I Know Where I’ve Been as part of The Living Black Music Project on SBS.

Hosted by Karla Grant, Living Black, is Australia’s premier Indigenous current affairs program and provides timely, intelligent and comprehensive coverage of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
