Casey Donovan Not Idle

Casey Donovan brings her big voice to cover show tunes and new tunes on Coffs Coast.

SIX years on from winning Australian Idol as a voluptuous teen and Casey Donovan has been anything but idle.

Woolgoolga will hear her belt out her killer voice next month.

Donovan shone in stage show, The Sapphires, in Australia and UK, winning herself a Best Supporting Actress Award at the Daegu International Musical Festival.

Speaking to us about her new single Big, Beautiful and Sexy and her musical career, she couldn’t be more excited about touring.

“I’m used to living out of a suitcase. I absolutely love it. I love to get out and meet people and talk to them at the end of the show,” Donovan said.

Her Big, Beautiful and Sexy tour showcases her talents singing songs of the greats such as Aretha Franklin and Mama Cass, songs from her Australian Idol journey and her two new singles.

Many criticise the fiery initiation of Australian Idol and Donovan is one for whom the immediate fame only lasted two years, but she is nothing but appreciative.

“I’m so grateful to my stepfather for pushing me to go on Australian Idol. I had to learn so much in so little time. Although it was being thrust upon you, it is so much harder trying to do that on your own.”

Performing in The Sapphires, a musical based on the true story of an Aboriginal covers band performing American soul numbers in the 1960s, alongside Christine Anu, also taught Donovan invaluable lessons.

“I’ve been learning how to put together a show, play a character, stagecraft and it’s given me a little bit more confidence to go up on stage.”

The stage experience shows in reviews of her Big, Beautiful and Sexy touring show.

“She stunned everybody with not only her voice, but her swagger.. full of so much energy… she really can sing anything,” wrote Critical Mass reviewer.

Online audience reviews buzz with compliments about her vocal range, emotional depth, professional style and ‘a woman who has grown into her skin.’

“Audience feedback has been fantastic,” Donovan said. “No-one knows what to expect when I get on stage. Some people go, oh, Australian Idol pop star – whatever and that’s kind of sad. I’m getting great reception, radio airplay and I’m doing it for me now.”

Active on Facebook, she recently posted a couple of songs online for feedback and asked followers what songs they would like her to cover. “Then I spent part of the next day rehearsing what they chose – it’s widening my experiences and I get to discover music I’m not familiar with.”

During her visit to the Coffs Coast, she will catch up with her Nambucca Valley Donovan cousins and remember past holidays. “I used to holiday up Coffs way every summer and get caught in rips and all that,” she said.

Casey Donovan brings her Big, Beautiful and Sexy show to Nambucca Heads RSL Club on Thursday, June 9 (Tickets $20 adults, $12 children) and C.ex Woolgoolga on Friday, June 10 (tickets $16 adults, $12 children). Yamba Bowling Club Saturday, June 11 and Lismore Workers Club Sunday, June 12

  1. Hi Casey, I wondering if you could visit our school as part of our NAIDOC celebrations, it would be great if you could spare even 30 minutes of your time when in the Lismore area.
I look forward to your reply.
