BLACKTOWN will recognise the contributions of indigenous Australians with events forNAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC — National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee — will celebrate the theme “Change: the next step is ours”.
A spokeswoman for Blacktown Council said the theme is aimed at tackling questions of indigenous Australians taking responsibility for their future.
On Wednesday, the council will host a day of family activities at Emerton Leisure Centre between noon and 3pm.
Events and entertainment at the day will include a touch football competition, dance and art workshops, indigenous games, a jumping castle and barbecue.
There will also be a similar event featuring a performances by Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan on Saturday at Nurragingy Reserve 10am-4pm.
Blacktown mayor Allan Pendleton is supporting the NAIDOC Week events.
“NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for the community to come together and learn about our country’s indigenous history and culture,” he said.
