The Archibald Prize is awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.
This open competition is judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW. Finalists are displayed in an exhibition at the Gallery (although in the early years all entrants were hung). Although it is a non-acquisitive prize, several of the entries are now part of the Gallery’s collection.
The Archibald Prize was first awarded in 1921. In establishing the prize, JF Archibald’s aim was to foster portraiture as well as support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. Over the years some of Australia’s most prominent artists have entered and the subjects have been equally celebrated in their fields.
Last year (in December) After I performed The Back To Bacharach show at The Basement in Sydney, Australia my step dad Norm (who loves to chat with anyone) Introduced me to a gentleman who worked on the premises and we got to talking about art. He told me that his wife was an artist and that she is doing some amazing things in her career and was looking for someone to paint for the next Archibald Prize. He also said that he would love for her to have a chat with me and see if something could come of it. Me being me, I was eager to see her work. After being shown some of her art work via a phone screen, I was in awe of this woman’s ability to paint such life like paintings!
Not long after the gig I received a Facebook message from a Loribelle Spirovski, Introducing herself as the partner of the gentleman I met after the gig at the Basement. She seemed lovely. I expressed my liking towards her art and I passed on my managers details to get the ball rolling.
Fast forward a few months. I put in a Facebook message to see how everything was going and what I needed to do for her to get this up and running. Loribelle informed me that she had received and email but with no chase up. She didn’t know what to do so she starting looking up and contacting other people to paint (Insert sad face)
I apologized to her for the stuff up and thanked her for the missed opportunity and told her if she had anything else coming up to let me know and that i’d love to help her out.
I thought that was it, I thought I missed out. (Sad Face)
A week or two later I received an inbox from Loribelle, Seeing if I was still interested in her painting my portrait… (Insert Big Smiley red cheeked face)
We exchanged numbers and I wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass me by again. We made a time and date to catch up and have a chat.
She had to do some rough sketches of me in a live sitting and also take some pictures (So that she could paint me) I was excited.
We finally caught up, her partner also came along and he was rather excited about this all coming together. We had a chat about how she wanted to paint me and her ideas, which were /are amazing! She asked me questions about my life and of course the Idol days and the days that came after fame (all the fun stuff :P). It was a very low key catch up. I had forgotten that she was going to take some pictures of me and I was dressed in my casual Sunday outfit (no make up, hair up in a bun and looking like a dag…Good one Donovan). I took my hair out of my bun and put some water over my hair to wake up my fro and changed my top (Made a little bit of an effort hehe).
After the photos were taken we kept chatting, Loribelle had also brought some of her canvas’ to show me her art in person. They were amazing! I was beside myself at how talented she is!
Here is some of her work, Judge for yourself…
Art work by: Loribelle Spirovski
Today I was sent an email from Loribelle with a picture of my face. She told me that she has been a busy little bumble bee completing other work but she finally has had time to sit down and start on me.
So here’s the *Sneek Peek*
It’s pretty surreal isn’t it? It kind of freaks me out how much detail has gone into this and its not even finished!
I cannot wait to see the what she comes up with!!
I shall keep you all updated on whats happening with my face 😛 And this Amazing artist!
